The Department of French & Italian
is pleased to announce the
Departmental Certificate in the Practice of Translation
Regardless of the career you pursue, you will probably find yourself working in multinational companies where your language skills will be of value, especially your ability to translate accurately and to understand the metalinguistic factors that influence translations. This Departmental Certificate in the Practice of Translation will attest to your ability to translate various types of texts both from French to English, and English to French.
The certificate program prepares students to what it means to be a translator today in different work settings, and introduces them to the principles of translation (skills and approaches) as well as tools and software used in translation. Through a pragmatic and literary approach to what it means to translate a text with context analysis, students will be able to identify types of texts and registers of language, understand different approaches to translation and the metalinguistic factors that need to be considered when translating (adaptations), and get hands-on experience translating texts in their discipline.
By the end of the program, you will gain an appreciation of translation as an "art", and be able to translate short technical and literary texts from French to English and from English to French.
In order to receive the Departmental Certificate in the Practice of Translation, students must successfully complete with a grade of B or higher:
- MDA-305 Translation Principles and Skills (2-unit course) offered Fall 2021
- FREN-322 Translation Workshop (4-unit course) (pre-requisite: Fren-300) offered Spring 2022
