Automatic App Translation Feature Coming To Pixel Phones With Android 12 - Android Headlines - Translation

Google Pixel phones are expected to support translate apps. The search engine giant will be bringing in this app translation feature for its Pixel phones once Android 12 OS starts rolling out.

Unlike Samsung or Apple, Google doesn’t sell their phones only in a lot of countries. For example, the company will sell its upcoming Pixel 5a 5G only in the U.S. and Japan.

Alternatively, you can consider importing a Google Pixel phone. Google does a remarkable job in terms of ensuring its software can be read in multiple languages.

When it comes to third-party services. you can use the built-in translation tool and translate web pages to your preferred language. Regrettably, this is not possible on Android apps.

A new app translation feature is coming to Pixel phones

XDA Developers discovered some evidence that suggests Google will be introducing a new translation feature for Pixel phones. In April, the site reported that Google was developing a new framework in the upcoming OS.

The site claimed that the new framework in Android 12 would enable translating an app’s UI to another language. Google launched the Android 12 Beta at Google I/O 2021.

Google later updated its API differences report with a new android. view.translation package. The company then added related methods in the View class that coincide with what XDA Developers spotted last month.

Since these are undocumented APIs, only educated guesses can be made regarding their intended use. There are several apps that support multiple languages, so only some old, discontinued, and niche apps are likely to benefit from this, according to Android Central.

What you need to know

On May 19, CommonsWare published a new blog post and confirmed XDA’s interpretation of this feature. The developer claimed the new feature will offer “system-supplied translations of user-visible strings.”

The feature may prove to be a challenge for developers. However, he confirmed that it will make apps with limited language support more accessible to users.

On the downside, app UI translations will not be a standard feature of Android 12 OS. Support will heavily rely on the availability of system-defined “translation service,” he explained.

The value config_defaultTranslationService defines the translation service in the framework. Developer kdrag0n noted this value is defined in Android 12 Beta 1 for Pixel phones.

Google has shown interest in developing auto translating tools for quite some time now. Installing the translate extension enables translation in the Chrome browser.

Moreover, the company is testing a service for translating titles to the native language of specific regions for YouTube. Google even rolled out an update that allows users to translate text in the overview screen. It is still unclear if this Pixel feature will be optional or mandatory for users.
