New Persian-Armenian dictionary unveiled by Sadi Foundation - Tehran Times - Dictionary

TEHRAN - A new Persian-Armenian dictionary compiled by Tigran Davtyan has been published by the Sadi Foundation.

The Armenian-Persian Dictionary will be useful for Iranologists, translators, students, journalists, businessmen and a wide range of readers.

The book was introduced during a meeting at the Writer’s Union of Armenia in Yerevan, the foundation announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at the meeting, Iranian cultural attaché Seyyed Hossein Tabatabai congratulated Davtyan for compiling the lexicon and elaborated on the role of culture and literature in the expansion of relations between the countries. 

“We appreciate the great efforts Davtyan made in compiling this dictionary and we hope that in the next editions transliteration and pronunciations can also be added,” he added. 

Davtyan who also attended that the meeting expressed his hope that his work would be a step towards introducing Iranian culture, art and literature to the Armenian people.

Hasmik Kirakosian of the Yerevan State University also described the spread of Persian culture in Armenia as a valuable step in the development of Iranian studies in Armenia.

Iranian-Armenian poet, translator and journalist Edward Haghverdian, Iranian-Armenian Persian literature scholar Khoren Aramuni and several other academics also delivered speeches during the meeting.

Davtyan, who is also chief editor of the department of the Persian program broadcast for foreign countries of Armenian Public Radio Broadcasting, published an Armenian-Persian dictionary in Yerevan in 2011.

The book sums up Davtyan’s long experience of using both languages, as well as new words used in the press and everyday life.

The first Persian-Armenian dictionary was published in Armenia in 1987 by Georgy Nalbandian, a well-known Armenian Iranologist.

Masalit to begin Bible translation training - Mission Network News - Translation

Sudan (MNN) — More than 100 people groups in Sudan have never heard about Jesus and lack access to His lifesaving truth. A handful of believers from one unreached people group, the Masalit, reached out to unfoldingWord last spring.

“They don’t have any Scripture material in their language, and they need someone to do Bible translation,” unfoldingWord CEO David Reeves says.

The pandemic put meetings and project planning on hold, but the Lord kept working. Today, the Masalit Christian population has more than doubled, Reeves says.

“Initially, we heard there were six believers. Now there are over 20 of them.”

This year, as soon as he had the opportunity, Reeves met in person with Masalit believers. “I went to Sudan [to] meet them face to face, understand this [church] networker’s desires, how we can help them,” he explains.

“There were four unreached people groups represented in the room,” Reeves continues, explaining how the Masalit eagerly anticipated working with others in this frontline effort. Many resemble the apostle Paul and Barnabas, he adds.

“These leaders are very passionate about their country, their people. You will not stop them until you take their lives; they will go and go, [moving] ahead,” Reeves says.

Working alongside church networks in Chad, unfoldingWord will teach Masalit believers how to do church-centric Bible translation.

“A lot of logistics have to pull together for that workshop in July, and there’ll be four workshops before this year ends. Pray for travel mercies, logistics on the ground, and good help for the teams,” Reeves requests.

“Travel is not as easy as it once was; the global COVID context makes it very complex.”

Geoffrey Wistow - Hiker Dictionary Vol. 1 - The Trek - Dictionary

Hiker culture is weird. You’re doing a lot of strenuous work, have either very little or way too much close human interaction, and you experience things that would never arise back in the real world.

Because of this, certain terms, phrases, or idioms arise as they do in other cultures. Below are some of the words I’ve heard, said, or thought about on trail.

zeek (zeek) noun – a period of seven days of no hiking activity.

“Did you hear that Delicious spent two weeks at the Snapped Guitar Hostel? They gave him a discount after his first zeek there.”

*Author’s note: A zero is a day with no hiking. A nearo is a day with few miles hiked, such as one spent getting town in the morning. Other common lengths of time are double and triple zeroes, often spent in a town to heal an injury.

sasquatch (sass-kwatch) verb – to stomp or clumsily and loudly move around or through an area such as a campsite or other hiker outdoor residence.

“Did you hear Nuggets sasquatching around camp last night? He took his tent down at 3am and then got lost looking for his food bag. It was sooo annoying.”

double PCT hang / TreeCT hang (dubble pee cee tee hang) noun – an unfortunate accident occuring when attempting to hang a bear bag in the PCT fashion wherein another object or part of the tree is use becomes stuck in the bear bag’s carabiner rendering the food bag stuck and possibly unable to be moved either up or down without substantial outside help.

“Yo, Pat got his bag stuck in that tree after that branch went through his carabiner. He double PCTed it!”

No problems here. Watch and learn, Pat.

leaf engineering (leef enjin-eer-ing) noun – the practice of using or placing a leaf, typically from a rhododendron, in such a way so as to allow water to pour from a source in a way that allows a hiker to easily refill a water bottle.

“Thank God someone did some thorough leaf engineering at this spring. I don’t know how I would have refilled my water without them!”

raw dog (raw dawg) verb – to experience naturally or without aid from technological or other material means.

Hiker 1: Did you see Overshoot raw dogging nature this morning?

Hiker 2: Eww, what??

Hiker 1: Get your mind out of the gutter! He was hiking without his headphones for the first time this week.

hyper wipe (hi-per wype) verb – to use toilet paper in an overzealous or overly aggressive manner in a way that results in injury or other harm to your buttocks.

“Crutch needs to buy some ultra quilted TP because he hyper wiped with some single ply and now he’s hurting.”

Startup Dictionary: 20 common startup buzzwords briefly explained - EU-Startups - Dictionary

As a sequel to our 2019 article on buzzwords in the startup ecosystem, we’re bringing an update with some newer terms. Two years have gone by and what one can notice is that much of the jargon in the startup scene today comes from software and fintech, even spreading through to other industries and making some expressions gain new meanings.

Again, we summarized a small list with 20 words and very common expressions in the startup world of 2021.

Accelerator – An accelerator is a support network – sometimes virtual and some other times in a physical location, that concentrates professional mentoring, services and expertise available for the startups “accelerated” there. The aim is to make the company grow faster and make faster ideations, tests and expose founders and teams to other startups in the same structure. Accelerators may or may not take equity and invest hard cash.

Agile – Agile web development refers to a particular way of performing tasks. In an agile team, programmers will work according to sprints, that can be of weekly or biweekly periodicity. Often having the phases of design, development, testing, deployment and review, those sprints are one of the kernels of modern software development methodology.

Algorithm – An algorithm is a sequence of steps for accomplishing an objective, with instructions documented for it. It comes from programming and Mathematics vocabulary.

API – An Application Programming Interface enables two different programs to communicate with each other as a translator allows people speaking two different languages understand each other. Software engineers and developers can use the code on the APIs to build modules and apps within other apps and pay only for what they use, without the need to buy infrastructure and maintain it.

Bleeding Edge – When your startup is developing or selling a “frontier technology” or a disruptive new way of thinking and doing things, the company is on the bleeding edge.

Customer journey – Customer journey is an expression that describes each and every point of contact and interaction a customer has with a business, a product or a service. From visiting a website to getting interested and buying a product, up to post-sales support.

Deliverable – A deliverable is a measured result, a product or an add-on that is planned and implemented in any project.

Exit Strategy – An exit strategy is a plan that may be executed when a startup is not performing well, as a stop loss measure. Or it can be also for the case where a targeted profitability level has been reached. Other situations include when significant market conditions change due to force majeure, regulatory reasons, liability lawsuits or owner’s retirement. A classic example for that is an angel investor who plans an exit strategy through an IPO – initial public offering.

Freemium – “Freemium” is built on the words free and premium, and it is a method where a startup offers free content or product licenses in order to acquire customers and users. Usually, the free version of the product or service is limited in scope compared to the fully fledged paid option, and it serves to entice the interest of the potential client.

Iterate – The exercise of thinking and prototyping add-ons and changes to a product, service or offer in your portfolio.

Intrapreneur – An intrapreneur is effectively an entrepreneur but who works within the corporate structure. They lead innovative projects which can include launching new services or products within this usually strict corporate structure.

Low Hanging Fruit – Startup companies need to add value to their offerings as much as they can. When teams talk about a low hanging fruit, it means they are speaking about a product that is ready or almost ready to be offered and has immediate potential for monetization and creating cashflow.

Mobile-first – When a product is designed as mobile-first, it prioritizes mobile devices as their first screens, rather than laptops and desktops. The product is built for the small screen and then often responsive, meaning it adapts to different sizes and formats.

Ping – Coming out of the telecom and messaging world, this word means to contact someone – i.e.: “You might want to ping them immediately about this issue”. It also means the time elapsed between sending a message and getting an answer.

Retargeting – Retargeting it the way companies try to attract people who already showed interest in their product through visiting their websites. Banners, e-mail sequences and P2P messaging are channels used to expose the potential customer to the specific product again and try to convert him/her into a client.

SaaS – The SaaS acronym means software-as-a-service. Instead of investing in a lot of infrastructure and high costs, one can scale up according to his/her needs, while paying a monthly subscription that is proportional to the software usage or traffic

Scale Up – Scale-up is when the company already has enough recurring revenue and it can maintain itself. It is also about replicating the business in other geographies and sectors, while expanding the client/user base.

Seed Funding – Often seen as the first investment of a startup, it may come from angel investors or from family and friends, with the intention of completing an MVP or starting more serious marketing and sales campaigns. Companies use seed money to acquire resources, hire teams and to build a product.

Stealth Mode – “Stealth mode” is an expression used to describe the development of a product in secret. When choosing stealth mode, a company often wants to surprise the competition and to protect the intellectual property being built.

Wireframe – Wireframes are diagrams used by designers to communicate to developers how a website or an app shall be structured, and it serves as the blueprint upon which the code is developed. It has layout, graphic elements’ locations, interface touch points and it focus on functionality, not beauty.
