Stardew Valley dev forced to roll back latest update for some players over issues that broke the life sim's Chinese ... - Gamesradar - Translation

The developer of Stardew Valley has rolled back the farming sim's latest update following some translation issues for Chinese-language players.

On April 23, following the release of the Stardew Valley 1.6.4 patch, Eric 'ConcernedApe' Barone penned a statement for players of the Chinese language edition of the farming sim. According to the update's official patch notes, 1.6.4 made "many edits and improvements to the Chinese version" and "changed the Chinese fonts to make them more appealing and readable."

It seems these changes haven't been received particularly well by those playing Stardew Valley in Chinese, causing the developer to retract some of the 1.6.4 patch. Barone's tweet is written in Chinese but was machine-translated by several users in the replies to the tweet. "Dear Chinese players," the post starts. "We have received a lot of feedback about the changes made in version 1.6.4 of Stardew Valley."

The post continues: "Therefore, we decided to restore the translation changes and fonts to version 1.6.3 (smoothing fonts is still an option). This change will be made in the next few days. In the future, we will take a more cautious attitude toward translation modification and pay more attention to player feedback. I apologize for any doubts caused by this. Thank you for playing Stardew Valley and for your support."

There haven't been any examples, but a few players have theorized that some of the translations could be "incorrect" or seen as "rude" to native speakers - causing NPCs to appear meaner than they're supposed to be. A fan in the replies to the tweet above has pointed out a similar instance in the French version that seems to refer to a spirit (as in alcohol) as a ghost.

The fourth iteration of the huge Stardew Valley 1.6 update released in March was rolled out late last week and featured several quality-of-life upgrades and minor changes. Some of the biggest additions are the 20 new 'alternate' mine layouts, 20 new volcano mine layouts, a new fishing feature called 'fish frenzies', a new "special" cutscene, and more.  

If you're still waiting for the Stardew Valley 1.6 update to make its way to other platforms, don't worry, it's still in development for console and mobile, but ConcernedApe has "no specific release date" yet.

BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A dictionary caught the attention of Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to the China National Archives of Publications and Culture last June.

Versions of the Xinhua Dictionary published in the 1950s and 1960s were on display, with their pages having turned yellowish with age.

The Chinese dictionary, a reference book with a large circulation, is among the most popular dictionaries in the world.

"I've used these editions," Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, told those at the scene while looking at several editions of the dictionary on display, his words tinged with nostalgia.

"I had such a dictionary in my pocket while working in the fields. During rest breaks, I would take it out to flip through a page or two, reading character by character," he recalled.

The president was referring to his life since 1969, when he was sent from Beijing to work as a farmer at Liangjiahe, a village in northwest China's Shaanxi Province. He spent seven years there and left at the age of 22.

"I would chew on the pronunciations and meanings of a character, figuring out the precise way to use the characters and phrases," he added.

The recollections showed an avid reader who developed this hobby from childhood.

Villagers in Liangjiahe still remember that Xi brought two suitcases full of books when he arrived in the village. During those years, the village had not yet been connected to the electricity grid. Xi read under a kerosene lamp.

During his stay, Xi read nearly all the literary classics he could find. For once, he overheard that a young man from Beijing had a copy of "Faust." Xi walked a long way to borrow it.

After reading "What Is to Be Done" by Nikolay Chernyshevsky, Xi emulated the protagonist to temper his will, removing the mattress and sleeping on a bare bed.

In addition to literary books, the young Xi Jinping also delved into classics like "Das Kapital." By the time he entered college in 1975, he had read the book three times, filling 18 notebooks with his reflections.

Decades later, he recalled a touching moment reading how Bishop Myriel helped Jean Valjean and changed his life in "Les Miserables," saying that "Great works always have such a great power to move readers."

Xi's passion for reading has constantly remained since childhood. Quoting an ancient Chinese proverb, Xi once said, "One's life is limited, but knowledge is limitless."  ■

Once you’ve set it up, using it is just as easy:

• On the upper left side of your iPhone 15, press and hold the Action Button for a moment.
• Continue holding the Action Button until the Dynamic Island changes to display "English, Listening".
• Start speaking the phrase you want to translate.
• After a moment, the translated text will appear on your screen and will be said aloud.
• If you need to hear the translation again, simply tap the play button.

Make sure to release the Action Button after the Dynamic Island shows "English, Listening" to ensure the feature works correctly.

Have you scrolled to the end of the emoji keyboard, looking for those peskily faraway hearts, and accidentally sent a mysterious “NG”? Asked a friend in Japan if they want to go out for hibachi and been met with a blank stare? As a language shifts and evolves, it’s wont to take absurd and arbitrary twists and turns. (Consider that inflammable means flammable, or that peruse means both to examine in close detail and browse superficially.) But when two languages get together, things can get extra weird.

On March 26, the Oxford English Dictionary, the historical dictionary widely considered as the definitive record of the English language, added 23 Japanese borrowings to its 500,000 words and phrases. Most were culture-related nouns, especially in food (“tonkotsu,” “onigiri”), along with “kintsugi,” “omotenashi” and “washi tape.”

“Hibachi” got an update as well. Though it was first added in 1933 as a charcoal brazier for warming hands or boiling water for tea, North Americans have been using it for just as long to mean something else. In English, the word can refer to a small portable barbecue, as well as to restaurants where someone cooks on a hot plate surrounded by diners (what’s called “teppanyaki” in Japan), as popularized by New York’s Benihana, which features a goofy chef who does tricks, including tossing food directly into people’s mouths.
