Cambridge Dictionary changes definition of 'man' and 'woman': '1984 wasn't supposed to be a how-to manual' - Fox News - Dictionary

Cambridge Dictionary is being criticized by conservatives on social media for altering the definitions of the words "man" and "woman" to include people who identify as a gender other than their biological sex. 

The definition of woman, which previously represented the longstanding view on sex, now states that a woman is "an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth."

Similarly, a man is now defined as "an adult who lives and identifies as male though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth."

This change was met with pushback from many, who argued that redefining society's categorization of gender and sex is harmful and inaccurate.

"Cambridge Dictionary just dropped a new definition of ‘woman’," Christopher Rufo, a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, tweeted. 

Rufo also pointed out that the dictionary used the pronoun "they" to describe the subject rather than "she". 

"Notice that the dictionary writers say ‘*they* may have been.’ They couldn't bring themselves to write 'she may have been,' because they know they're lying. That's the tell," he tweeted.

"Ceding linguistic territory to the radical Left. What could go wrong?" conservative commentator Rita Panahi wrote.

Daily Caller writer Mary Rooke wrote, "F-ing traitors to the truth. Cambridge Dictionary is only the latest. If we don’t stop them from erasing women our civilization is [not going to make it]."

Adam Brooks, a British social commentator, questioned whether women are happy with the change.

"Oh wow, the @CambridgeWords dictionary definition of a woman is shocking, how did we get here? Surely women aren’t happy with this?" he wrote. 

Dan McLaughin, a senior writer at National Review, argued the change is Orwellian. "1984 wasn't supposed to be a how-to manual," he tweeted.

Cambridge Dictionary's alteration of the words "woman" and "man" reflect a growing trend on the left to reject the once universally accepted usage of those categories. In April, Fox News published a report that highlighted numerous Biden administration agencies' failure to be able to answer the question: "What is a woman?".

Cambridge Dictionary recently expanded its entries for the words “man” and “woman” to include trans people and reflect current language around gender, and nobody is more pissed off about it than right-wing provocateur Ann Coulter.

Per CNN:

A spokesperson for the Cambridge Dictionary told CNN that the updates went into effect in October. But the move seemed to go largely unnoticed until this week, when the dictionary’s expanded definition of “woman” garnered backlash from conservative commentators on social media and was subsequently covered by right-leaning media outlets.

While the Cambridge Dictionary’s primary definition for “woman” remains “an adult female human being,” a second definition refers to “an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.” Similarly, the British reference guide defines “man” as “an adult male human being” and also “an adult who lives and identifies as male though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth.”

“Only problem they might run into here is, we’ve still got our old definition of ‘imbeciles’,” 61-year-old Coulter tweeted yesterday, along with a screenshot of an article featuring the headline: “Cambridge Dictionary updates definition of ‘woman’ to include trans women.”

Cambridge Dictionary’s change comes after Merriam-Webster updated its definitions of “male” and “female” to include trans people in 2020, and added a new definition for the pronoun “they” in reference to nonbinary people in 2019.

Honestly, we’re not surprised Coulter is losing her sh*t over this. After all, this is same person who had a public panic attack when Target.com messed up her order last year and freaked out over a satirical video by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus back in April. (She was also giddy when a hacker vandalized Wikipedia with giant swastikas in August 2021.)

What is Argentina national anthem about?

The national song originates from the Argentinian War of Independence, which raged between 1810 and 1818 as patriot forces sought to drive the Spanish Monarchy out. 

Vicente Lopez y Planes, who would later serve as interim president, wrote the song initially titled 'Patriotic March'. 

It was adopted as the country's anthem in 1813, three years before independence from Spain was declared.

The original national anthem is much longer and includes an emotional anti-Spanish section, with lyrics on Argentina's struggle for independence.

The French national anthem, entitled La Marseillaise, was composed by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle during the French Revolution, and its upbeat tune belies some rather disturbing lyrics!

France had declared war on Austria at the time it was written, so it is perhaps no surprise that the lyrics focus heavily on the battlefield.

What is the French national anthem about?

Rouget de Lisle was a captain of the French army engineers and in April 1792 he was garrisoned at Strasbourg.

He felt moved to compose a piece of music after then mayor of Strasbourg Baron Philippe-Frederic de Dietrich lamented France's lack of a national anthem at a dinner for officers of the garrison.

He composed a piece originally entitled 'Chant de Guerre pour L'armee du Rhin' (War Song for the Army of the Rhine), with lyrics reflecting the violence taking place in France at a time when Prussian and Austrian armies were invading.

Rouget de Lisle's song was taken up by the people of France, and after volunteers from Marseille sung it in the streets of Paris later that year, it came to be known as La Marseillaise.

The song's revolutionary links saw it banned by various French leaders from 1804 to 1830, but it was reinstated as the national anthem of France in 1879, ensuring generations of Les Bleus footballers would have the chance to sing it!

Its new definition is at odds with biological reality

“It’s definitely a girl,” said the doctor performing my ultrasound last week. There was no mention of “assigning sex”,  just a statement of fact spoken in the language you would expect. But will my baby girl be allowed to define herself simply as a woman in years to come? Maybe not, if Cambridge Dictionary has its way. The online dictionary has added a new second definition under “woman”: “an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been said to have a different sex at birth”. 

It is the latest in a long series of examples that chip away at what it means to be a woman, often erasing our sex class in the process. While Cambridge Dictionary seems to think anyone should be able to call themselves a woman if they happen to feel like it, actual biological women must constantly fight to stake claim to the word. Instead, we are reduced to dehumanising terms like “menstruators” or “cervix-havers” — even in healthcare campaigns.

A few years ago, Cancer Research ran an awareness campaign calling on “anyone with a cervix” to go for a smear test, and there are an increasing number of NHS maternity services and organisations where gender-neutral terms such as “pregnant people” or “chest-feeders” are creeping into their literature, in some instances even replacing “women” and “mothers”. In July, Merriam-Webster added a supplementary definition of “female” as “having a gender identity that is the opposite of male”. 

There is a real danger here. If dictionaries begin to describe women in this way then it will become even harder to maintain a legal definition of the word that allows for necessary female single-sex spaces, such as women’s refuges. This is something that is already becoming contentious — just look at the backlash JK Rowling has faced for daring to launch a women-only support centre for victims of sexual abuse in Edinburgh. 

Of course, language evolves and so dictionaries update words and meanings once a new term has entered popular usage, but are we really expected to believe that lexicographers at Cambridge Dictionary think the majority of English-speakers would agree to and use their new definition? A dictionary is supposed to help us define, to find true and accurate meanings in language in order to help make sense of the world around us. 

Similar to the trend for invented gender-neutral pronouns, Cambridge Dictionary’s woman update feels like an unnatural attempt to shoehorn in a language change and impose it onto people, whereas a change or addition to a dictionary definition should really be the opposite: coming from the people who use those words, us.

We should always be wary of any attempts to control our language and the way we use words. They are usually authoritarian and ideologically driven, two motivations that certainly have no place in compiling an informative resource.
