Google Debuts Smart Glasses Built With Real-Time Language Translation - PCMag - Translation

A successor to Google Glass is in the works — and this time it’s focused on language translation.

On Wednesday, Google debuted a new pair of smart glasses the company has been working on. The prototype product has been designed to transcribe, translate and then display what someone is speaking over the lenses, all in real-time.

“What we’re working on is technology that enables us to break down language barriers,” said Eddie Chun, Google director of product management, in a video about the prototype.

The device essentially uses Google Translate to churn out translated subtitles. Google also showed a deaf person could use the smart glasses as well to help them understand others who haven’t learned sign language.

The company debuted a video of the prototype at Google I/O while talking up its attempts to explore augmented reality devices. Google CEO Sundar Pichai described the technology as a new frontier in computing.

“These AR capabilities are already useful on phones and the magic will really come alive when you can use them in the real world without the technology getting in the way,” he wrote in a blog post.

However, Google didn’t reveal much else about the product, including its name, the specs, or how the subtitles exactly look over the lenses. Instead, the video of the prototype merely provided a “simulated” point of view of the experience.

Still, the device signals Google has some big plans for the smart glasses space. The original Google Glass was officially introduced back in 2012 with much fanfare, but interest eventually fizzled out due to a myriad of issues, including its $1,500 high price.  The company has since pivoted to selling a Google Glass product meant for enterprises.

English translation of China's Civil Code published - ecns - Translation

The English translation of the Civil Code of the People's Republic of China has been published by U.S. publishers, offering readers worldwide an authoritative reference book on the landmark law.

The book has also been included in the internationally renowned legal database HeinOnline as the only English version of the law.

The book was translated by experts from the Southwest University of Political Science and Law, and published by William S. Hein &Co., Inc. and Wells Information Services Inc. (USA).

"Translating Chinese laws into foreign languages is of great significance for helping foreign readers understand the latest progress in China's practice of rule of law," said Zhu Yuanqing, a member of the translation team.

Niu Benlin, another translator, said the team will continue their research in promoting the standardization of Chinese legal terms.

The Civil Code took effect on Jan. 1, 2021. It has six parts: real rights, contracts, personality rights, marriage and family, inheritance, and tort liabilities. It is the first law with "code" in the title since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Real Madrid metaverse offers virtual stadium and real time translation tools - SportsPro Media - Translation

  • Real Madrid Virtual World is available as a mobile app
  • Club promises exclusive content, stadium tour, and chat rooms

Real Madrid hopes a new virtual social platform, created in partnership with Astosch Technology, will engage the Spanish soccer giants’ global fanbase.

Several sports organisations believe the metaverse can engage younger, digitally native fans and bring international fanbases closer to the club. Some have used the technology to live stream matches, hold virtual events, and offer interactive experiences and games.

For its own metaverse effort, Real Madrid have worked with Astosch to build a digital recreation of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, offering fans the ability to walk the corridors of the famous arena – including a 3D recreation of the trophy cabinet – and the surrounding area.

The platform will also use digital avatars and multimedia translation tools to allow for interactions between fans in different territories. Real are also promising to offer prizes and exclusive content via the metaverse project.

The ultimate ambition is to engage fans who are passionate about the team but may never be able to attend a game, and help them communicate with other fans who they may otherwise never meet due to physical and linguistic obstacles.

The ‘Real Madrid Virtual World’ platform is available as a mobile application for both iOS and Android mobile platforms as a free download.
