JRPG fans are excited for a new English fan translation of a 'Trails' game unreleased in the west - PC Gamer - Translation

Ten years after it was released in Japan, Nihon Falcom RPG The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki is getting an English translation from a well-respected fan translation group named Geofront. The translation, being released under the English title Trails to Azure, is years in the making, and finally releasing on Saturday, May 22.

"I would like to think that after over a year of tireless work, we have successfully done my favorite game of all time justice," wrote lead editor Scott. "I truly believe we left no stone unturned in localizing Azure. This is our love letter to not only the Trails series but our predecessors who localized these games before us and those who will continue to localize them after us."

It can be hard to keep track of just how many games there are in the Legend of Heroes JRPG series, which started in 1989, especially when you dig into the Trails in the Sky sub-series and its multiple sub-sub series, like Trails of Cold Steel. (The fourth and final Cold Steel game was just released on Steam in April). Most of the Trails games have been released in the west by publishers XSEED and NIS America years after they first came out in Japan, but a few have never made it over.

Geofront released a fan translation of another missing Trails game, Trails from Zero, in 2020. Trails to Azure is the sequel to that game, and has officially only been released in Japanese and Chinese. The Geofront translation patch will actually apply to the Chinese version of the game, which you can buy digitally. Geofront wrote a walkthrough to doing just that here. Geofront's release isn't technically Azure's first English translation—another fan effort was released in 2018—but it's definitely one that series fans are excited for.

Coincidentally, a Steam release of Trails to Azure is coming later this year, too, but only in Chinese and Korean. Geofront has said it has "no plans" to release a patch for that version of the game (or for its PSP or Vita ports), but other modders may pick up the torch and patch Geofront's script into those releases someday.

No, Merriam-Webster didn't change the definition of 'anti-vaxxer' - PolitiFact - Dictionary

Merriam-Webster defines the word "anti-vaxxer" as "a person who opposes vaccination or laws that mandate vaccination." 

Online, some people are alleging that the dictionary powerhouse recently, sneakily changed the meaning of the word. 

The Russia-backed media organization RT wrote on May 12 that Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary was "again redefining language to fit a narrative, this time framing its definition of ‘anti-vaxxer’ to include not only people who oppose vaccination, but also those who are against inoculation mandates."

Young America’s Foundation tweeted that day that Merriam-Webster "updated its definition of ‘anti-vaxxer’ to include anyone who opposed mandatory vaccines." 

A screenshot of another tweet being shared on social media claims that "The Merriam-Webster dictionary has changed their definition of ‘anti-vaxxer’ to include ‘people who oppose laws that mandate vaccination.’ Welcome to 1984, this is The Ministry of Truth."

Peter Sokolowski, editor at large of Merriam-Webster.com, told us that the entry for "anti-vaxxer" was first added to the online dictionary in February 2018 and hasn’t been revised or changed since.

We found evidence to support that. 

An archived page of the "anti-vaxxer" entry from Nov. 25, 2018, shows the same definition as today. That’s also true for archived pages from 2019, 2020, and 2021.  

Two years ago, someone cited the definition in response to a Quora question about "the exact definition of an anti-vaxxer," and it’s referenced in a November 2018 HuffPost story about a screenwriter who compared the word "anti-vax" to a racial slur. 

The current definition has existed online for more than three years, since it was first added to the dictionary, according to Merriam-Webster.

MONTREAL -- A Quebec group unveiled a new online dictionary on Monday: a guide to recognizing hate symbols in the province.

The "Little Illustrated Guide to Hate in Quebec,"  by the Centre for the Prevention of Radicalization Leading to Violence, or CPRMV, currently contains 81 entries.

The dictionary groups together expressions as well as visual symbols and numbers that are used as coded hate language. The majority belong to the lexicon of white supremacists and neo-Nazis, such as the character of Pepe the frog or the Hitler salute.

Others are references with a misogynistic flavor, like the "red pill" originally taken from the movie The Matrix, which has, in recent years, been appropriated by anti-feminist movements.

The goal is to "be able to give a tool to front-line workers and citizens" to enable them to recognize the symbols that "convey hatred in a hidden way," said the group's director of education, Roxane Martel-Perron, during the virtual launch.

The project was welcomed by Mylène St-Onge, a street worker for the organization TRIP Jeunesse Beauport, which was also present at the launch.

"By having neutral and varied information, this will give us the possibility of using it for popular education," as well as "allowing rapid identification" of signs of radicalization, she said.

 As the universe of extremist groups is constantly evolving, the database will be updated as new symbols emerge, the dictionary's creators said.

"The idea is for it to be something collaborative," said Martel-Perron, adding that all the website's users can propose new definitions.

CAUTION OVER UNINTENDED EFFECTS 

The situation is complicated, however, since spreading extremist signs can have perverse effects.

"When we put something on our website, we bring it to life," said Mark Pitcavage, a researcher from the Anti-Defamation League's Center on Extremism who was present at the launch.

That U.S.-based organization has maintained a record of iconography related to white supremacism for 20 years and was consulted during the development of the "Little Guide."

It was precisely to avoid giving visibility to any symbols "which will not last over time" or "which are not widely used in Quebec" that the CPRMV has decided to include the ones present on its site, said Martel-Perron.

She didn't rule out the idea of ​​creating a second, more detailed dictionary including some of the more obscure terms, which would be reserved for specialists.

According to Statistics Canada, in 2019 police reported 1,946 hate crimes across the country, including 402 in Quebec. Most were related to ethnicity (46 per cent) or sexual orientation (14 per cent).

The CPRMV is a Quebec non-profit organization whose mission is to fight hate ideologies by raising public awareness and supporting people who are being radicalized, along with their families.

It was founded in 2015 by the City of Montreal in collaboration with the Government of Quebec.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla players have translated all the in-game Native American dialog.

At a certain point in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, protagonist Eivor can journey to the Vinland area of North America, where they encounter the Kanien’kehá:ka, a group of Native Americans. The game itself never actually provides a translation for the Native American dialog that the player encounters while in Vinland, but players have translated the language of the Kanien’kehá:ka in the video below.

It's an impressive feat of dedication from the Assassin's Creed Valhalla player base. In the video just above from Access the Animus, the translation process is outlined in full, revealing not only dialog pertaining to the events of Valhalla, but also that of Assassin's Creed 3 and Rogue, both of which have ties to the North American continent.

This isn't even the first in-game language that Access the Animus has translated. Earlier this year, the channel revealed that they'd successfully deciphered the Isu language, a made up tongue that has been with the Assassin's Creed series since all the way back in Ezio's original outing in Assassin's Creed 2. With the release of Valhalla though, fans were finally able to piece together enough of the fake language to accurately decipher it.
