Korean Webtoon 'Hell' Gets English Translation - Hollywood Reporter - Translation

In the world of Hellbound, people receive a message from an unknown sender that includes your name, the fact that you are going to hell, and how much time you have left. When the clock runs out, a supernatural being appears to send the condemned to hell. As the nation grapples with this new normal, a religious sect rises up to claim this is all a sign of divine will. Meanwhile, people must learn to survive through this horror.

“Choi Gyu-seok’s sharp and keen drawing style goes well beyond depicting the modern Korean’s physique, expression, and wrinkles," Parasite Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho said in a statement praising the graphic novel. "It reaches a genius-level where we can feel the character’s anxiety and fear. A truly overwhelming world of fear that cannot be explained with words like 'God’s prank' or 'grand nonsense.' We are already burning in the center of the hell that Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok are portraying."

Park Jung-min, star of the Netflix adaptation, added in a statement, "This book clearly reveals the anxiety of this era through the simple, yet dramatic setting of a prophecy to hell. It’s even fun and tense. It also feels like somewhere between Train to Busan and The Fake. In a world where even opinions become information, what do we believe? Why? How? This book provides you food for thought."

Yeon is directing the Netflix series, due out this year.

UNM launches Excellence-in-Translation Center: UNM Newsroom - UNM Newsroom - Translation

The University of New Mexico launched the Excellence-in-Translation Center (UNM EX-TRA), an initiative that leverages the strengths and abilities of UNM’s highly diverse and international graduate student community and the academic translation expertise and training.

The initiative is a collaboration between the UNM Global Education Office and the UNM College of Education and Human Sciences through its Language, Literacy, & Sociocultural Studies program.

“It is our great pleasure to offer to both the general public and the university community an array of translation services between English and an exciting diversity of world languages,” said Lois Meyer, director of UNM EX-TRA. “One significant purpose of the Center is to enrich the academic competencies and professional expertise of the skilled and specially trained UNM graduate students who provide our quality translation services. Our goal is to assist you in internationalizing your products and services by magnifying you impact in a diverse, globalized world.”

UNM EX-TRA provides specialized academic translation of written scholarship including manuscripts, book chapters and articles. The initiative also provides written translation for diverse types and genres of other textual documents and materials including applications, transcripts, letters, birth certificates, fliers, scripts, announcements and pamphlets. The bilingual and biliterate translators are trained to provide academically sound, professional and accurate translations, aiming to go above and beyond in capability those provided by most commercially available translation services.

UNM EX-TRA provides a needed and critical service to expand access to information for a variety of campus and community purposes and seeks to further internationalize U.S. and non-U.S. academic scholarship. UNM EX-TRA currently offers translation between English and four languages: Arabic, French, Korean and Spanish, with samples available on the UNM EX-TRA website.

"I am so pleased by the meaningful opportunity to serve as a bridge for people who want to exchange their knowledge of the English and Korean worlds," said Hyun Hee Bae, UNM EX-TRA translator.

Legal & IP Translation Startup Bering Lab Gets Funded By Korean Search Giant Naver - Slator - Translation

Legal & IP Translation Startup Bering Lab Gets Funded By Korean Search Giant Naver

If your company has AI as a cornerstone, investors will probably love you. Among such companies in recent funding news are Israel-based language service provider (LSP) BLEND, platform and API integration on a SaaS model; Berlin-based LSP Lengoo, an AI agency; and New York-based tech startup OthersideAI, an email productivity tool built on the world’s largest language model, GPT-3.

Now comes a Korean startup that has homed in on machine translation (MT) for the ever-growing legal & IP space (e.g., patent filings actually reached record numbers during Covid).

Bering Lab secured funding in a round led by an accelerator of Korean search giant Naver and participated in by Seoul National University’s Seoul Techno Holdings, according to an April 6, 2021 Tech in Asia article.

Seong Hyun Moon, CEO of Bering Lab, told Slator that the seed round actually closed back in November. He said Naver gets pitch decks from over a thousand startups each year, investing in less than 20 — so they were “fortunate to succeed in impressing [Naver] with our technology.” The amount raised remains undisclosed.

Moon is majority shareholder of two separate entities bearing similar names: MT startup Bering Lab, which received the seed funding, and Bering House (Bering Legal), which according to Moon is the “largest legal translation provider in Korea and a valued client of Bering Lab.”

Bering refers to the strait between Russia and Alaska and their vision to connect East and West even further through technology, the CEO said. He added that being raised trilingual, growing up in Thailand and Mexico, majoring in neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania, studying law at Northwestern University, and becoming a member of the New York bar all inspired him to put up Bering.

Moon founded Bering House while still in law school, “believing that legal translation should be performed by legal professionals”; and then Bering Lab, “when the time became ripe” tech-wise.

MTPE

Bering Lab offers MT, machine translation post-editing (MTPE or PEMT), bespoke MT engines, and a translation productivity tool (a.k.a. CAT); the latter offered free of charge for now.

While Bering Lab’s MT and MTPE services are limited to legal & IP, Moon said they are open to developing bespoke MT engines for a range of sectors as long as the client provides enough training data.

The Lab currently provides a number of LSPs with MT and MTPE. According to Moon, their MT engine “reflects domain-specific terms and phrases much more accurately” for Korean↔English legal and patent translations compared to others on the market — a key differentiator for clients. And plans are in the works to cover Chinese and Japanese “in the near future.”

Asked about the tech behind their MT engine, Moon said it is built on “different technologies including sub-word tokenization, beam-search decoding, and semi-supervised learning.”

As for Bering Lab’s CAT, Moon said it incorporates various systems, including automatic post-editing, quality estimation, word alignment, and word suggestion. Other tools on the Lab’s drawing board are ones for financial, clinical, and technical translation.

On their near-term plans, Moon told Slator, “Our goal this year is to further develop our Korean legal and patent machine translation engines to a point where not utilizing them becomes a major loss for our potential clients.”
